Albany Fights AI Data Centers: Stop Kenwood Data Center

New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, sponsor of the Responsible Data Center Development Act, and Food & Water Watch, will be embarking on the New York Fights AI Data Centers statewide tour from August 22 to August 30. The Senator will visit over a dozen sites with active or proposed data centers across New York State to hear the concerns from impacted communities and advocate for Governor Hochul to sign the Senator’s bill, which codifies requirements for public participation and transparency, renewable energy use, and labor standards. The legislation also creates separate water and energy rate classes for data centers in an effort to protect ratepayers from increased costs.

On the morning of Thursday, August 27, Senator Gonzalez’s tour will be coming to the steps of Albany City Hall for a press conference to call upon the Governor to sign the Responsible Data Center Development Act and demand that the Albany Common Council to enact its own moratorium and to oppose the Kenwood Commons proposal for a data center in the South End of Albany.

Troy City Council Meeting - Thursday, 8/20

Ground ZERO for the anti-Flock debate in the 5-1-8.

The Council needs to hear the voices of her city's residents. We need to say loud and clear that we don't want AI powered LPRs in Troy. We want Local Law 3 passed in its strictest form and we want the Flock contract terminated. If you live in Troy, start writing that speech. And if you don't, come anyway and bring a poster with your message!

Medicaid & Medicare Anniversary Day of Action!

Citizen Action is honoring the 61st anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare by organizing member-led public actions in each of its chapters across the state on Thursday July 30th!

Medicare and Medicaid have protected the health and financial security of millions of Americans for more than 60 years. Medicaid alone covers roughly one in three New Yorkers, including children, seniors, people with disabilities, and working families. In recent years, these programs have been under-attack by political elites beholden to the super rich and healthcare corporations, who have undermined Medicare and Medicaid through privatization and by attacking funding.

This anniversary is about more than celebrating a successful public program. It is an opportunity to build organized power. The people who rely on Medicaid have enormous collective strength because of our numbers, yet that strength is often not reflected in public policy because we have not been organized as a constituency. As a result, decisions about healthcare are too often made without the voices of those most affected.

We are bringing together people directly impacted by healthcare policies to share their experiences, build relationships, develop new leaders, and take collective action!

Join Citizen Action NY Thursday, July 30th to be educated, hear community stories, and be engaged in ongoing organizing efforts to protect and improve healthcare statewide.

De-ICE Citizens Bank - Guilderland

Send Citizens Bank a clear message: financing private prison and immigration detention facility operators The GEO Group and CoreCivic is bad for business.

Citizens Bank is bankrolling the country’s two largest prison companies that are earning record profits operating dozens of ICE detention facilities. While most major banks have cut ties with CoreCivic and The GEO Group, Citizens Bank is deepening its financial support for these companies, which are already holding more than half of the 70,000 immigrants currently in ICE detention centers across the country.

The bank’s capital is supporting a deplorable ICE agenda that aims to fill detention centers with more than 100,000 people by next year. Even as it publicly touts its commitment to “strengthening our communities,” Citizens Bank has played a key role in helping The GEO Group and CoreCivic access more than $2.5 billion in financing, some of it approved earlier this year. This comes as the companies face a mountain of allegations, including forced labor and wrongful deaths due to understaffing and medical neglect at their facilities.

We won't quietly stand by as Citizens continues to finance the private prison & ICE detention companies that are harming our communities. The 2019 exodus of banks from the industry in response to activism should be a reminder to us that our voices matter. Now it's time to use them. Visit www.de-icecitizensbank.org for more information and other actions you can take!
