Medicaid & Medicare Anniversary Day of Action!

Citizen Action is honoring the 61st anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare by organizing member-led public actions in each of its chapters across the state on Thursday July 30th!

Medicare and Medicaid have protected the health and financial security of millions of Americans for more than 60 years. Medicaid alone covers roughly one in three New Yorkers, including children, seniors, people with disabilities, and working families. In recent years, these programs have been under-attack by political elites beholden to the super rich and healthcare corporations, who have undermined Medicare and Medicaid through privatization and by attacking funding.

This anniversary is about more than celebrating a successful public program. It is an opportunity to build organized power. The people who rely on Medicaid have enormous collective strength because of our numbers, yet that strength is often not reflected in public policy because we have not been organized as a constituency. As a result, decisions about healthcare are too often made without the voices of those most affected.

We are bringing together people directly impacted by healthcare policies to share their experiences, build relationships, develop new leaders, and take collective action!

Join Citizen Action NY Thursday, July 30th to be educated, hear community stories, and be engaged in ongoing organizing efforts to protect and improve healthcare statewide.

DEFLOCK WEEK OF ACTION - Troy City Council Meeting

Troy City Council Meeting - Thursday, 8/20

Ground ZERO for the anti-Flock debate in the 5-1-8.

The Council needs to hear the voices of her city's residents. We need to say loud and clear that we don't want AI powered LPRs in Troy. We want Local Law 3 passed in its strictest form and we want the Flock contract terminated. If you live in Troy, start writing that speech. And if you don't, come anyway and bring a poster with your message!

De-ICE Citizens Bank - Guilderland

Send Citizens Bank a clear message: financing private prison and immigration detention facility operators The GEO Group and CoreCivic is bad for business.

Citizens Bank is bankrolling the country’s two largest prison companies that are earning record profits operating dozens of ICE detention facilities. While most major banks have cut ties with CoreCivic and The GEO Group, Citizens Bank is deepening its financial support for these companies, which are already holding more than half of the 70,000 immigrants currently in ICE detention centers across the country.

The bank’s capital is supporting a deplorable ICE agenda that aims to fill detention centers with more than 100,000 people by next year. Even as it publicly touts its commitment to “strengthening our communities,” Citizens Bank has played a key role in helping The GEO Group and CoreCivic access more than $2.5 billion in financing, some of it approved earlier this year. This comes as the companies face a mountain of allegations, including forced labor and wrongful deaths due to understaffing and medical neglect at their facilities.

We won't quietly stand by as Citizens continues to finance the private prison & ICE detention companies that are harming our communities. The 2019 exodus of banks from the industry in response to activism should be a reminder to us that our voices matter. Now it's time to use them. Visit www.de-icecitizensbank.org for more information and other actions you can take!

Grazie? No Grazie. Basta Bigotry.

The Capital Region stands for inclusion, respect, and community solidarity. Join community allies to protest the upcoming opening of Grazie Italian Kitchen at 320 Northern Blvd.

This establishment is owned by Frank and Alyssa Cappello, the proprietors of Taste of Italy and She’s Yar. Their Latham business was recently forced to close indefinitely after its official social media page published a horrific, Islamophobic comment mockingly directed at the tragic death of 7-year-old Harbe Nagi. Bigotry, racism, white supremacy and evil have no place in our communities. While the owners have shuttered their business to escape backlash, they are not finished facing the repercussions of their own words and actions. We are mobilizing to ensure this hatred is not permitted to simply relocate and open a new storefront under a different name in the Capital Region. Come out to demand accountability and show that hate is never welcomed. Please bring signs, music, and—most importantly—empathy and compassion for the family who suffered the loss of an innocent child.

Albany County Public Defender - Rally for Union Recognition

Staff members at the Albany County Office of the Public Defender will rally outside the Albany County Office Building at 112 State Street in Albany at 12:30 p.m. on June 26 to demand that the County recognize their choice to unionize together with the Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys–UAW Local 2325. Albany County Public Defender staff include a collaborative team of attorneys, caseworkers, investigators, paralegals, legal secretaries, and other professional staff who work tirelessly to defend the rights of indigent individuals in Albany County. Since an overwhelming majority of staff members announced their intent to unionize together on March 2, Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy has refused to voluntarily recognize a union that includes both attorney and professional staff, forcing divisive, dilatory, and costly litigation.

Staff members are united in their demand that Albany County change course by voluntarily recognizing their union and begin the process of moving forward together to provide the best possible representation for the people of Albany County. Their goals include protecting the quality and integrity of public defense in Albany County, securing equitable compensation and benefits for staff, increasing staff input in office decision-making, and promoting the organizational transparency necessary to carry out their critical and constitutionally mandated work. Public Defender staff know from their work in court that having a meaningful voice at the table is essential to achieving just outcomes — and the workplace should be no different.

Ava Agree, an attorney working on criminal cases has stated, “A union representing all staff at the Public Defender’s Office is critical because we all need a seat at the table to assure we are supported over the long haul and that the people of Albany County get the high-quality representation they deserve.”

If their union is recognized, staff at the Albany County Office of the Public Defender will join more than 3,600 members of the Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys (ALAA)–UAW Local 2325. ALAA–UAW Local 2325 is a union of legal and social service workers, including attorneys, paralegals, social workers, investigators, receptionists, interpreters, advocates, administrative staff, and counselors, with chapters at dozens of nonprofits and government agencies across New York State. The union represents members at public defender and public-interest legal organizations, including The Legal Aid Society, The Bronx Defenders, Neighborhood Defender Service, Queens Defenders, Brooklyn Defender Services, and the Schenectady County Office of the Public Defender. The Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys is the oldest union of attorneys, legal services workers, and advocates for the indigent in the United States, and it is dedicated to supporting the critical work of the Albany County Office of the Public Defender in representing the people of Albany County.
